ECCAN: Standing Shoulder to Shoulder for Inclusive Communities

The recent UK Supreme Court ruling concerning the definition of "women" under the Equality Act has sparked significant reflection here at ECCAN. As a climate action charity fundamentally driven by the principles of widening access and participation, we want to be clear: our dedication to cultivating safe, welcoming, and truly inclusive spaces for everyone within our network remains absolute and unwavering. 

The growing divide in public conversation is a real concern. We hold a strong conviction that genuine progress and transformative change are powered by collaboration and a deep appreciation for the richness of diversity. Our strength lies in the collective energy of many voices and varied experiences, all focused on tackling the urgent climate emergency. 

ECCAN stands firmly in solidarity with our trans siblings. We see and value the crucial contributions of trans people to our communities and to the vital work of the climate movement. For us, inclusivity isn't just a word; it means our spaces will always be open and affirming for individuals of all gender identities, without exception. 

Our GreenLight seed grant fund vividly demonstrates this commitment in action. We're proud to support initiatives like Transition Edinburgh South’s Queer Gardening Group, where safety and community are central. Our determination to fund projects that have genuine inclusivity at their heart ensures that the local climate movement reflects the vibrant and multifaceted nature of our city. 

We understand that moments like these can understandably create unease and anxiety. We want to reassure our network and the wider community that ECCAN's core values are solid and enduring. We will continue to work diligently, ensuring that every aspect of our activities, events, and partnerships is built on a foundation of deep respect, genuine understanding, and a heartfelt commitment to the wellbeing of each individual.
