We are excited to announce ECCAN’s first Creative Writing Competition!
We are looking for creative individuals interested in sharing their non-fiction stories related to climate and weather events they have witnessed in Edinburgh. Whether it is the winds keeping you up at night, unusual temperatures getting to you or any other event that got your attention – there is a story to tell!
You can have artistic liberties in terms of the stories (characters, time of the day, general events around the story) as long as it’s based on real-life climate or weather event you experienced or observed.
The competition guidelines in a nutshell:
Your story needs to include:
- The general area of the event (name of district, street or general location in Edinburgh)
- Timeline (one off event or continuous?)
- How you/the character involved in your story felt
- A direct or indirect suggestion of what could be done to adapt to it
Rules of the competition:
- Your story must be up to 1500 words (no minimum word count)
- The location of the story needs to be in a real and currently existing Edinburgh location
- You need to be the original author of your submission
- Any submissions found to be product of ChatGPT or other AI-generated content will be disqualified.
- Pictures, illustrations or other media may be added at your discretion
Reward
The winning submission will win a £50 voucher for Weigh To Go and a publication of their story on our website. Runner-ups will win £25 vouchers for Shrub Coop.
To send your submission (or for any further questions): Please email in PDF format to eirini@eccan.scot .
Information from all entries for this competition will be used to anonymously inform the CRSS’s Story Map and help advise the Scottish Government’s regional adaptation plan. If you do not wish for your submission to feed into the CRSS Story Map, please state so when submitting it
Deadline: Friday, January 10th 2025, 23:59pm. Results of the competition will be published by the end of January 2025.
